So, I read a lot. Like A LOT a lot. I thought I’d start sharing with y’all what I’ve read and enjoyed. I can promise there will be a wide range of books so I hope you’ll enjoy them. They also won’t be super long, boring, spoiler-filled reviews. Ready? Let’s go. First one.
Potter Springs by Britta Coleman
I stumbled upon this book several years ago at a used book sale. Sadly, it got put on my to-read bookcase and forgotten for a while. I recently picked it up and dove into it. And boy was that a good idea!
This is a great book. The story, simply put, is about a newly married couple dealing with some huge stressors. New job. New city. Loss of a child. Meddling parents. A transition from the big city to a tiny town. All of this major life stress puts a strain on their relationships with everyone in their lives as well as their relationships with the Lord. It’s a highly relatable story that pretty much anyone could connect to.
Britta’s style is easy to read. The story is set in Texas and she sets the scenes like only a Texan could. The dialog is realistic and conversational. The characters feel super real and remind me of visits to my grandmother’s home town — a little farming town in the Texas Panhandle of less than 10,000 people.
Lines I loved:
“Sweat tickled like devil fingers inside Amanda’s wedding dress.”
“Weeping my last for the night, but joy comes in the morning. The promise followed her like a Sunday benediction.”
Unfortunately, this book seems to be Britta’s only novel release. All I’ve been able to find online from her is a blog that seems to have been abandoned back in 2015. Breaks my heart. With a first novel this promising, a second could have been a dream. Hopefully though she’ll surprise me and release a second novel next week.
If you’d like to pick up a copy for yourself you can find it over on Amazon for a steal. It came out back in 2006 so that’s good for y’all price wise.
I hope you’ll check it out. You won’t be sorry.
